  • 1754 – The first international boxing match was held — in Harlston, England. Jack Slack, the champion from Great Britain, knocked out the French challenger, Jean Petit. Everybody got home at a decent hour, too — the bout lasted only 25 minutes.
  • 1845 – The French Army introduced the saxophone to its military band. The musical instrument was the invention of Adolphe Sax of Belgium.
  • 1915 – The first transcontinental telephone service was inaugurated when two people held a conversation between New York and San Francisco.
