    Hedge Fund Performance: Strong First Quarter, But Still Lagging Behind Broader Market

    According to the Eurekahedge Hedge Fund Index, hedge funds are up 1.05 percent for the first quarter of 2014, generating a total of $30 billion in net assets. While hedge fund gains are high, the industry still lags behind the broader market.

    The S&P 500 is up 1.38 percent for the first quarter of 2014, according to data from Bank of America Merrill Lynch.

    Hedge Fund Assets Up At $2.09 Trillion

    According to the Eurekahedge Report, hedge funds are up 0.78 percent year-to-date, with total global assets at a new high of $2.09 trillion.

    Over the past twelve months, North American funds of hedge funds have been up 6.42 percent, which surpasses the Eurekahedge Hedge Fund Index by 1.85 percent.

    According to FINalternatives, “the chill felt by hedge funds in March did not abate last month,” and the HFRX Global Hedge Fund Index showed just that for the month for April.
